Native Culture and Language Preservation

National Endowment for the Humanities Grant

CulturalPreservationPrograms

American Indian communities face the risk of losing their traditional arts, tribal languages, and cultural knowledge. Preservation and restoration grant programming plays an important role for Tribal Colleges and Universities (TCUs) and the students and communities they serve because it offers the opportunity to protect Native culture, language, and traditions. The American Indian College Fund offers two types of cultural preservation grants: the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) grant and the Anheuser Busch Foundation Cultural Preservation Grant.

National Endowment for the Humanities Grant

The College Fund was awarded the Challenge Grant in 1993 by the National Endowment for the Humanities which led to the establishment of the NEH Cultural Preservation Endowment Program. The NEH Cultural Preservation Endowment supports cultural preservation and revitalization efforts at 24 of the 35 TCUs. TCUs participating in the program are allowed to use the funding for their college’s cultural preservation efforts. Past projects include community events, museum archival documentation, and establishment of cultural centers on campus.

The National Endowment for the Humanities is offered every year to the participating 24 TCUs every January with cultural preservation projects concluding in December of that year.
