The Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwe Community College in northwest Wisconsin on the Lac Courte Oreilles Reservation is closed until further notice, after a fire broke out on Friday, June 1.

Classes were not in session at the time and the maintenance staff ensured that those working in the school got out safely. There were no injuries.

The fire caused heavy damage to the far east wing of the Sawyer County college, which houses University of Wisconsin Extension programs and maintenance facilities.

The fire was in a ceiling, and firefighters had to remove roof panels to get to the source. Officials said smoke had emerged, but there were no flames visible.

The fire is under investigation.

Interim president Raymond Burns said, “We lost about 15 offices a couple of classrooms, so we’re going to be scrambling for space when fall hits.”
