Save The U.S. Post Office – Vital to Voting, Goods and Services in Indian Country

Apr 23, 2020 | Advocacy

The United States Postal Service (USPS) provides essential services for millions of Americans, with even more importance in rural and remote reservation communities. The USPS is vital in Indian Country and rural America to access vital medications, goods, communications, Census forms, mail-in ballots, and more. Without additional funding, the USPS could soon run out of money and be forced to cut crucial services—despite increased demand during the COVID19 outbreak which has necessitated more goods being shipped and mail-in ballot voting.

Twyla Baker, President of Nueta Hidatsa Sahnish College, a trustee of the American Indian College Fun, and a member of the Mandan-Hidatsa tribe in North Dakota recently spoke to Vox magazine about the need for the USPS in tribal communities.

President Baker said, “The absence of the USPS would particularly affect indigenous people living in tribal lands, as there are already few resources dedicated to keeping them connected with the world. It would just be kind of a continuation of these structures in the U.S. that already dispossessed people of color, black and indigenous people of color, and people below the poverty line.”

Call your U.S Representative and Senator today and ask them to fully fund the USPS in its next stimulus package.

This work brings together six geographically separate community segments across the expansive homelands of the MHA Nation!
