The American Indian College Fund congratulates Sherry Pocknett (Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe), who made history June 5 when as the first Indigenous woman to win a James Beard Award for culinary excellence. Plocknett is an Indigenous chef and educator, specializing in Native American Indigenous food and New England cooking, and participated in the College Fund’s New York City EATSS event in May. She owns the restaurants Sly Fox Den, and Sly Fox Den Too, where her knowledge of Native traditions, her ingenuity, and her work ethic contribute to the mouthwatering dishes she creates for her guests. Plocknett believes the best way to teach is hands-on with kids, young adults, and even parents, and has led special events with up to 100 kids in a class.
