Denver, Colorado – January 11, 2011 – The American Indian College Fund received a grant of $10,000 from the Mellam Family Foundation for scholarship support to American Indian students pursuing teaching or science degrees with the intent of becoming science instructors. Scholarships are designated for specific majors within the science field, including biology, chemistry, physics, environmental science, and information technology/computer science.

Tracy Rogers, Executive Director of the Mellam Family Foundation, said, “Quality science education and science careers will be a key to maintaining our nation’s competitiveness in the world community. In addition, many important decisions regarding the future of our planet will require individuals to be able to interpret scientific findings in meaningful ways. Providing scientific educational opportunities through the American Indian College Fund will help ensure that Native Americans play a role in this future.”

“The generosity of the Mellam Family Foundation is deeply appreciated,” said Richard B. Williams, President and CEO of the American Indian College Fund. “This program will help Native students achieve their educational goals while also impacting future generations that will benefit from our graduates as they enter classrooms to teach the sciences.”
