Fund Announces Tribal College President and 33 Tribal College Students of the Year

April 20, 2011

The American Indian College Fund honored 33 American Indian scholarship recipients at its 2010-11 Student of the Year reception at the American Indian Higher Education Consortium Student Conference in Bismarck, North Dakota. The Students of the Year each received a $1,000 scholarship from the Colorado-based Castle Rock Foundation.

American Indian College Fund President and CEO Richard B. Williams also presented Lionel Bordeaux, president of Sinte Gleska University and one of the founders of the tribal college movement, with the Tribal College President Award for his contributions to American Indian education during his career. Bordeaux also received a $1,000 award.

Bordeaux recounted his journey from the University of Minnesota, where he was all but dissertation in his Ph.D. studies, to return to his people in Mission, South Dakota, at the request of a tribal elder to help start the Rosebud Sioux nation’s tribal college. After accepting his award, Bordeaux said, “The education system we have is not ours [the presidents’, faculties’, and staffs’]. It is yours…it comes from you…We’re all here today in redefining and rebuilding tribal nations.”
