Public Comment Opportunity for Proposed Title IX Policy Changes Making Students More Vulnerable

We need your help! Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos has proposed new rules to Title IX.

One proposed change would significantly narrow the scope of complaints that schools are required to investigate. Schools would be able to choose what standard of evidence to apply to cases of sexual misconduct; only formal complaints filed with an authority figure would be investigated; and schools would no longer be required to investigate complaints occurring off campus or outside of their school-sponsored programs.

These proposed rules would make it more difficult for students who experienced sexual and/or gender-based harassment or discrimination to speak up, to seek help, and to file a complaint.

The net effect of this rule change would be to make our schools less safe for all students, and especially Native students, who are at greater risk.

All students must be assured that they can fully and equally participate in pursuing their education. This is a basic civil rights issue.

With the recent submission of its proposed changes to Title IX policies, the Department of Education is seeking comments from the public and must respond to your concerns.

We invite you to help us advocate for our students and all students and their safety by submitting your comments and concerns before the January 28 deadline through the Federal eRulemaking Portal.
