The American Indian College Fund honors Della Bad Wound and Frank Sherwood, two American Indian elders from the Denver community, at their annual Denver Elders Dinner on Tuesday, December 6 from 5:30-8:00 p.m. at The Cable Center, the University of Denver, 2000 Buchtel Boulevard in Denver, Colorado. Three hundred American Indian elders attend the traditional buffalo feast, which honors them and offer thanks for all elders’ guidance throughout the year.
To commemorate Native American Heritage Month, AT&T is furthering its commitment to Indian Country with more than $1 million dollars in contributions to connect Native youth to education that leads them to the 21st century workforce. Last week the 2016 graduating class at Salish Kootenai College (SKC) celebrated its graduation. Located on the Flathead Indian Reservation in Montana, SKC has served the Flathead Valley since 1978. This year the school awarded baccalaureate degrees in the arts and sciences; associate degrees in the arts and sciences and associates of applied sciences; and and certificates to 127 graduates.
Drums Along the Hudson, a New York non-profit organization that sponsors an annual music and multi-cultural festival in celebrating American Indian contributions to the environment and culture, has named the American Indian College Fund as one of its 2016 honorees.
The American Indian College Fund will create pathways to college for Native American youth to improve access to college, thanks to a $2.4 million grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. The three-year, three-pronged program, called The Native Pathways to College Project, will begin June 1st of this year.
