Casey Lozar, an enrolled member of the Confederated Salish & Kootenai Tribes, was promoted to the position of Vice President of Resource Development for the Denver, Colorado-based American Indian College Fund (the Fund). In his new role, Lozar is responsible for resource development for all fundraising departments at the Fund.
For more than 10 years, the Target Corporation has been helping Native American students pursue a college education at tribal colleges and universities. This year, Target has renewed its commitment with a grant of $20,000 to the American Indian College Fund to continue the Target Tribal College Scholarship Program for the 2011-12 academic year.
The Walmart Foundation has announced it is granting $100,000 to the American Indian College Fund for scholarships for Native students for the 2011-12 academic year. Under the program, one $2,500 scholarship will be given to a first-year, first-generation student at each of the 33 accredited tribal colleges nationwide. To qualify for the scholarship, students must be an enrolled tribal member or a descendant, be attending a tribal college, and have a minimum cumulative 2.0 grade point average.
The American Indian College Fund (the Fund) has received a challenge grant from the Johnson Scholarship Foundation (JSF). The JSF will match up to $750,000 over the next three years to establish a scholarship endowment which will provide scholarships to American Indian students pursing business or entrepreneurship degrees at mainstream and tribal colleges and universities (TCUs).
Graduation ceremonies were held all over Indian country the last several weeks. So many of our scholarship recipients have worked countless hours to receive that elusive document among Native people, the one that testifies to the completion of their course of study. In addition to the stress brought on by their rigorous curriculum, many have endured natural disasters in their communities and family tragedies. Yet, they found a way to emerge from it and stay their academic course.

I was born and raised all over Southern California on various reservations but I am enrolled in the Tonawanda Band of Seneca Indians of New York.
The American Indian College Fund received a $100,000 grant from the Highland, California-based San Manuel Band of Serrano Mission Indians. The grant will be divided to support several major initiatives: $50,000 will support the San Manuel Band of Serrano Mission Indians Tribal College Scholarship Program; $25,000 will go towards the Sovereign Nations Scholarship Fund Endowment, which provides scholarships to Native American students in perpetuity; and $25,000 will support expenses for the American Indian College Fund’s annual fundraiser, the Flame of Hope Gala, on Thursday, October 20, in Denver, Colorado.
The American Indian College Fund received a grant from Hilton Worldwide to support the Hilton Worldwide Tribal College Hospitality Scholarship Program for the 2011-12 academic year. Hilton Worldwide, a renowned global leader in the hotel and hospitality industry, will provide scholarships for students studying hospitality or business at Blackfeet Community College, Mont.; Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwa Community College, Minn.; or Southwestern Indian Polytechnic Institute, N.M.
Fred C. Martinez, a young Navajo man, was brutally murdered after deciding he didn’t want to choose between being a boy or a girl. Fred self-identified as a gay male, but also expressed the feminine aspect of his personality in his dress and self-presentation. In Navajo culture, this concept is known as nádleehí.
On April 28th, many of the Fund’s long time donors, the Fund’s board of trustees, a contingent of Wieden + Kennedy employees, and prominent figures from Portland’s Native community came together to show David Kennedy their appreciation for his 20 years of rigorous support of the American Indian College Fund.
