Indigenous Literacy Story Series
The Indigenous Literacy Story Series seeks to shift perceptions of literacy and education in tribal nation communities, provide evidence of literacy success and innovation in tribal nation communities, establish the College Fund as a resource and leader in literacy resources, and encourage innovation and collaboration within TCUs, across TCUs, and between Native inservice teachers.
This story series features guest writers from the College Fund, TCUs, and Native educators in the field.
Indigenous Literacy is:
A means of expressing and sustaining connection, culture, and sovereignty.
The ability to communicate (tell stories, speak, write, create, teach, or demonstrate) and comprehend (listen, read, sense, interpret, view, learn, or practice).
A starting point for Native people to co-create their environment in ways that are grounded in – and sustaining of – Indigenous cultures, languages, and ways of knowing.
Relational and intergenerational, supporting kinship with each other, ancestors, and the land.
Essential to thriving Indigenous communities.

The American Indian College Fund named three new members to its Board of Trustees at its 2013 quarterly spring meeting in Green Bay, Wisconsin. New trustees include Mr. Bill Black, Vice President and Executive Director of the Comcast Foundation and Director of Community Investment for Comcast Corporation; Thomas S. Brooks, Vice President, AT&T External & Legislative Affairs; and Jeffrey Fillerup, Partner, McKenna Long & Aldridge LLP.
American Indian College Fund Hosts an Open House and Opening Night of “Open Identities” a Printmaking Art Exhibition
The American Indian College Fund (the Fund) is hosting an open house, Friday, May 17, 2013, at 8333 Greenwood Blvd., Denver, CO. The event begins at 5:00 p.m. and ends at 7:00 p.m. The open house was initially envisioned by Fund President Cheryl Crazy Bull as an opportunity to visit with the Fund’s local supporters, Native community members, family, and friends.
Comcast Cares Day at the Denver Indian Center
On Saturday morning in Denver, the city got a respite from a month of freezing temperatures and several feet of snow. The weather worked out perfectly for volunteers from the American Indian College Fund, who teamed up with about 100 volunteers to participate in the Comcast Cares Day at the Denver Indian Center, Inc.
Tribal Colleges Contribute Millions to State Economies
The five tribal colleges of North Dakota have contributed $182 million to the state’s economy after accounting for direct and secondary spending. A report commissioned by the North Dakota Association of Tribal Colleges measures the collective impact of the state’s five tribal colleges serving Native communities
Survey Suggests College Fund Scholarships Important to Student Success
The American Indian College Fund commissioned a survey of American Indian College Fund Full Circle scholarship recipients. The goal of the survey was to determine students’ financial need, program retention and completion rates, and respondents’ views regarding the relationship between their college experience and Native cultural perpetuation.
Updates from the Wakanyeja Early Childhood Education Initiative
The ECED Special Topics course attended the Native American Child and Family Conference on Wed. March 20th at the Hotel Albuquerque. Students attended conference sessions of their choice and also helped facilitate a workshop from 3:00-5pm.
Coca-Cola Foundation and American Indian College Fund Honor 33 First-Generation Scholars
The Coca Cola Foundation and the American Indian College Fund honored 33 American Indian scholarship recipients at its 2012-13 Coca-Cola First Generation Scholarship banquet at the American Indian Higher Education Consortium Student Conference in Green Bay, Wisconsin.
Thirty-three Students Honored as Student of the Year
The American Indian College Fund honored 33 American Indian scholarship recipients at its 2012-13 Student of the Year reception at the American Indian Higher Education Consortium Student Conference in Green Bay, Wisconsin. The program, sponsored by the Adolph Coors Foundation, awarded each honoree a $1,000 scholarship.
AT&T Grants $100,000 to Support Native Scholarships
The AT&T Foundation contributed $100,000 to the American Indian College Fund (the Fund) to provide scholarship support for Native students in the American West studying at the nation’s tribal colleges and universities.
Funders Meet Little Big Horn College President and Student
On Friday, the Fund’s staff was given a rare treat: the opportunity to hear from both a TCU president and TCU student in one day. The presentation highlighted their challenges, successes, and overall vision for their tribe’s future. Sharing these words were President of Little Big Horn College, Dr. David Yarlott, and a first-year business student, Riley Singer.
