For the twelfth straight year, the American Indian College Fund hosted its annual holiday dinner for American Indian elders. Three-hundred elders from an array of tribes gathered at the Church of All Saints at 2559 S. Federal Blvd. in Denver to enjoy a feast of buffalo, other treats, and American Indian entertainment. Diane Buck and Grace Gillette were honored as Elders of the Year for founding the Denver March Powwow.
Since 1995, Pendleton Woolen Mills has supported the American Indian College Fund to help Native college students pursue their dreams of obtaining a college degree. Pendleton has continued its longstanding support by granting two gifts to the Fund.
Prior to my internship, I had never been to Mesa Verde National Park. To make it worse, the two guys I brought to help me set up my camp were as unfamiliar with the area as I was. Some people at a gas station gave us directions that sent us in the complete opposite direction of the park, and we spent a good three hours in the wrong forest. To add to all of that, we were in a Dodge Caliber, which isn’t equipped for back-country driving.
We still need your help. The flooding crisis is far from over and as the waters recede, they are leaving behind devastation to our students and staff. For others, it is wait and see if their efforts, literally, hold up the Missouri River.
The rain, plus heavy snowpack beginning to melt in the Rocky Mountains, has the Army Corps of Engineers increasing water releases through the six Missouri River dams to get rid of water as quickly as possible as flooding continues.
Anthony Walker (Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska) is on the receiving end of a sandbag pass from Kyle Leaf (Cheyenne River Tribe). Both are students in a Criminal Justice class from United Tribes Technical College that volunteered Thursday afternoon at a home north of Mandan along the river.
Since 1995, Pendleton Woolen Mill’s support of the American Indian College Fund (the Fund) has helped more than 400 students pursue their dreams of obtaining a college degree. Pendleton has continued its longstanding support by granting two gifts to the Fund. Pendleton’s first gift of $15,514.83 is from royalties generated from sales from a blanket line designed exclusively for the Fund.
The Fund served up a feast for Native elders, including roast buffalo, green beans, mashed potatoes, fry bread, and posole. Traditional Native entertainment included Native flute, drumming and singing, and a special appearance by Santa Claus, who distributed goodie bags and hams to the crowd. Drawings were also held for a variety of door prizes.
Attending the American Indian College Fund’s Flame of Hope Gala this October 14 in Denver, Colorado at the Seawall Grand Ballroom at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts helps us raise money for student scholarships. But the gala also confers a benefit to attendees. In addition to a gourmet meal and first-class entertainment from Big Head Todd and the Monsters this year, the Flame of Hope Gala presents you with the opportunity to meet several of our tribal college students.
Oregon-based Pendleton Woolen Mills has donated $39,000 to establish an endowed scholarship program benefitting American Indian tribal college student scholarships through a partnership with the American Indian College Fund (the Fund). This endowed scholarship program, entitled the Pendleton Endowment, will provide financial assistance to Native students attending any of the 33 tribal colleges located throughout the United States.
