To make Finals Week a little less stressful to its Native Pathways program participants, Student Coach Teresa Melendez lovingly packed care packages with highlighters, pens, snacks, and herbal tea for students.
Robin Maxkii shared some snippets from her internship experience at the National Science Foundation in Washington, D.C. In a conversation with her about her internship experience, she shared that her time in Washington was one of her best experiences in learning more about how to think about and act on information given by working professionals and mentors. Although she was appreciative of their advice, she chafed at feedback about her career trajectory and academic pursuit.
The #CollegeBoundNative Campaign encourages high school seniors to apply for college. Native Americans are the least likely of any group to go to college. But college is essential to many careers, which require a certificate, associate or bachelor’s degree. The American Indian College Fund is setting out to change that statistic—and the future of Native students—through a campaign to get more Native high school seniors to apply for college.
My name is Dane Allapowa and I am a sophomore at Cankdeska Cikana Community College (CCCC); a tribal college in Fort Totten, N.D., on the Spirit Lake Reservation. Thanks to the American Indian College Fund’s Native Pathways to College program, I was able to take a tour of my prospective college, North Dakota State University (NDSU).
Robin began her academic career at Diné College, where she graduated in 2014 with dual associate degrees in Diné studies and behavioral science in 2014. After completing her first research internship in Washington, D.C. she went home to visit her mother before starting classes for her bachelor’s degree at the Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA).

Internships, like scholarships, are an important piece of a student’s higher education process. Internships provide students with opportunities to improve their skills and confidence while allowing them to build relationships in their professional fields. Unfortunately, not all students have the opportunity to work as an intern.
